Out of Sight, Out of Time
Ally Carter’s Out of Sight, Out of Time is the fifth book in the Gallagher Girlsseries.
After being hunted and watching the people around her get hurt in Only the Good Spy Young, Cammie decides to run away. Her last memory is of her leaving the Gallagher campus at the end of her junior year. She wakes up months later in the Alps with no recollection of her summer. The only thing that remains are the bruises on her body and the mysterious habits she has picked up. When she returns to school, she is overcome with the need to remember her previous summer. While the Circle continues to hunt her, Cammie and her friends travel the world trying to recover Cammie’s memory. Out of Sight, Out of Time is an extremely emotional book for Cammie. After being gone for many months, she struggles with all the things that have changed around her. Little things like the seasons mix with bigger problems like broken friendships. Hurt by her departure then relieved of worry by her return, the people around have different reactions to her reappearance. Some seem to kind to her while others are unnecessarily mean. None of them truly know how the let her cope with the loss of her memory. Her memory is the defining problem of this book as she discovers new habits she has no recollection of learning and wonders if she can be trusted. The strong, fun Cammie we knew is replaced by Cammie that is broken, but healing. Out of Sight, Out of Time is an exciting read. The pacing is amazing. The plot starts off enticing before stealing your attention and running away with it. It navigates its way through twist and turns making it almost impossible to predict what happens next. The plot also takes the unique direction of retracing your steps instead of finding your path. It is a treasure hunt style novel as the only clues are the her fractured memory and the reminders she left behind. Following in the footsteps of the fourth novel, this book also takes a much darker path. Despite the darkness that surrounded it, Only the Good Spy Young managed to have many happier moments. Out of Sight, Out of Time had even fewer. Cammie was emotionally and mentally broken and it is easy for the reader to feel her pain. The happier parts make the book an emotional roller coaster. It makes you laugh, before shattering your heart into a million pieces. Unfortunately, Cammie is the only character to develop over the course of this book. Many of the characters take background roles as Cammie recovers. Fortunately, we do get to see how they have matured and changed. While they are not actively developing in the novel, it is nice to see how all the characters have changed. I give this 294 page book 4.5 stars. Series AnalysisThe Gallagher Girls series revolves around Cammie Morgan, a girl who goes to a school for spies. In the first installment we are introduced to a strong, talented girl as she practices the skills she has learned. While being lighthearted and humorous at first, the series progressively becomes darker. Full of action and excitement, this book is a must read for girls getting into Young Adult books. Goodreads gives the series an average of 4.21 and this site has given it an average of 4.08.
