Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy
Ally Carter’s Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy is the second book in the Gallagher Girls series.
After using her spy skills to obtain a cute boyfriend and later being forced to breakup with said boyfriend, Cammie Morgan is determined to have a fresh start and is looking forward to a hopefully peaceful semester. Sadly, this is not to be. Not only is Cammie the center of attention, after breaking several rules to sneak into town and maintain a boyfriend without getting caught (until he crashes her Covert Operations Test), she is also hears whispers of the word “Blackthorn”. Being a spy-in-training, Cammie is naturally curious and recruits her friends to find out who or what is “Blackthorn” and what it has to do with the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women. Cammie, the Chameleon, is an amazing spy, and her talents of pavement artist is almost unheard of. Unfortunately, her nickname seems to become invalid in this book. On more than one occasion, she is the center of attention. Cammie has matured between the two books, but not by much. After her expirence with Josh, she is also familiar with boys. When compared to her other classmates, she seems to be the most level-headed one (except Macey), especially when it comes to boys. Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy is a fun sequel to I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You (and has a MUCH shorter title). In this installment, mysterious guests are introduced to the school causing an uproar among the Gallagher Girls. Instead of facing unsuspecting victims like in the previous installment, this time “The Operatives” are tracking opponents who are trained in the art of being a spy and may or may not be better than our protagonists. Since “Blackthorn” is somehow intertwined with the school, the stakes are much higher. Like in the previous book, the plot starts out slow and has an explosive, action-packed climax before reaching a vague ending, but optimistic ending. It is hilarious to see the spies-in-training react so strongly to seemingly everyday things and be completely calm when it comes to things that are incredible to every non-spy person. It is a short and fun read, but it can definitely hold your interest. I give this 236 page book 4 stars. Series AnalysisThe Gallagher Girls series revolves around Cammie Morgan, a girl who goes to a school for spies. In the first installment we are introduced to a strong, talented girl as she practices the skills she has learned. While being lighthearted and humorous at first, the series progressively becomes darker. Full of action and excitement, this book is a must read for girls getting into Young Adult books. Goodreads gives the series an average of 4.21 and this site has given it an average of 4.08.
