I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You
Ally Carter’s I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You is the first book in the Gallagher Girls series.
Main protagonist, Cammie Morgan, goes to the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women. This boarding school is especially unique with courses like Covert Operations and Advanced Encryption. The Gallagher Academy is more than a school for geniuses; it’s a school for spies. Cammie Morgan is known as “The Chameleon” for her amazing ability to blend in and not be seen. During a Covert Operations assignment, an ordinary boy notices this extraordinary girl. From that day on, Cammie is trying to maneuver a relationship with an ordinary boy who can never know she's extraordinary, and break countless rules to keep this relationship away from the prying eyes of teachers and students. Cammie Morgan is an exceptional spy. She fluently speaks fourteen languages, can kill a man with her bare hands and seeming disappear among the crowd. While she bears the name “Chameleon” proudly, she often wonders if it has anything to do with the fact that her dad died on a mission, so no one wants to see her. None of her classmates want to acknowledge the very real fact that they are training to be put in life-threatening situations. She is also very witty and independent. Despite all her skills, she is absolutely clueless at being a normal teenage girl. This makes for hilarious situations, comments, and conversations. I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You, is an average book, but the world it builds has a lot of potential. Despite what you would expect from a spy book, this installment doesn’t have that much action. The plot mainly focuses on world-building and Cammie practicing her spy techniques on an unsuspecting teenage boy. This book is witty and fun, but it is one of those kinds of books where you enjoy the fun and sweetness of it, but when the book is done, you have to ask yourself, "What actually happened in that book?" This book not only has a super long title, but is more of a prequel in the sense that it builds the setting and the characters but doesn’t get into the main overarching plot of the whole series. There isn't a hint or clue at something bigger than this one book. This book definitely has room to grow and develop into an amazing series. I give this 284 page book 3.5 stars. Series AnalysisThe Gallagher Girls series revolves around Cammie Morgan, a girl who goes to a school for spies. In the first installment we are introduced to a strong, talented girl as she practices the skills she has learned. While being lighthearted and humorous at first, the series progressively becomes darker. Full of action and excitement, this book is a must read for girls getting into Young Adult books. Goodreads gives the series an average of 4.21 and this site has given it an average of 4.08.
