Only the Good Spy Young
Ally Carter’s Only the Good Spy Young is the fourth book in the Gallagher Girls series. After the dangerous events in Boston and the reveal the that Cammie is a target, Cammie quickly goes from being Gallagher’s Chameleon to a guarded girl in the spotlight. The story starts on winter break in London. On the surface, this trip is a fun way to spend winter break with Bex and her MI6 parents. In reality, Cammie is under strict guard. Of course, the winter break couldn’t be entirely peaceful. The fun is broken when Cammie encounters a very scared Joe Solomon. Although only receiving a few words from the man, Cammie’s world is broken apart. She returns to Gallagher Academy with more questions than answers. As she embarks on her latest semester, she is plagued by endless questions and the unquenchable desire to find answers.
At this midway point in the series, Cammie has clearly become a different character. In I’d Tell You I Love You, But then I’d Have to Kill You, a book with a title that is much too long, Cammie is fun. She proves herself to be intelligent, yet hilarious out of touch with the normal world around her. Her fun and naïve nature changes in future installments. She realizes the horrors of real missions and the dangers of real spy work. This doesn’t mean the Cammie introduced in the first installment is gone. She still is brave, determined, and wise enough not to be fearless. It means her fun nature has been greatly subdued. Only the Good Spy Young was a good read. Those who use this series as a fun between emotional series will still enjoy this book. While it carries much darker themes compared to the first three books, it also has the teenage charm we have come to enjoy. Cammie’s mischievous streak and Ally Carter’s sarcastic writing are ever-present in this installment, but Ally Carter added more depth to a few of the characters. Cammie’s world is falling apart as it becomes increasingly difficult to differentiate between friends and allies. Her need for answers puts her at odds with her friends who are only concerned for her safety. Bex, Liz, and Macey are given background roles in the story. They receive very little character development as the story focuses on uncovering the secrets around Cammie. This book reveals the answers to many questions while leaving you with countless more. I give this 265 page book 4 stars. Series AnalysisThe Gallagher Girls series revolves around Cammie Morgan, a girl who goes to a school for spies. In the first installment we are introduced to a strong, talented girl as she practices the skills she has learned. While being lighthearted and humorous at first, the series progressively becomes darker. Full of action and excitement, this book is a must read for girls getting into Young Adult books. Goodreads gives the series an average of 4.21 and this site has given it an average of 4.08.
