Don't Judge a Girl By Her Cover
Ally Carter’s Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover is the third book in the Gallagher Girls series.
Just before the start of the junior year, Macey McHenry invites Cammie to watch her father accept a vice-presidential nomination. Cammie was looking forward to an exciting ending of her summer and got just that as Macey and Cammie find themselves in the middle of kidnapping attempt. Thanks to the girls’ spy training, they manage to escape, but not unscathed. Macey survived with a couple broken bones and Secret Service agents tracking her every move. Cammie survived with a bruises and a burning desire to know who tried to kidnap Macey. Once again, Cammie works with her Gallagher friends to uncover buried secrets. Unfortunately for the staff at the Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, Cammie hasn’t broken her habit of ignoring rules. She has an insatiable curiosity and when she has a mission, all rules become optional. Like any girl, Cammie is obsessed with her new boyfriend Zach. Sadly, Cammie hasn’t seen Zach all summer and when Zach does happen to pop up, it is never for romantic reasons. At the midday way point in the series, Cammie has definitely matured. Although she still has an unrelenting curiosity and comical boy troubles, Cammie has started to become aware of the dangers of spy work in the real world. Although her previous journeys were conducted in and near the Gallagher Academy, her newer missions involve trips outside the Academy. Through this, she starts to mature and prepare for the more dangerous final three books. Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover takes a surprisingly serious turn. While Cammie normally chooses to regal her readers with tales about her love life and how she uses her training on others, she chooses to spin a more serious tale in this third installment. Both Cammie and Macey are deeply affected by the kidnapping attempt. Macey has become more distant and feels the weight of publicity and her father’s career on her shoulders. Cammie becomes obsessed with finding out who attacked them and occasionally, steps in to protect Macey herself. In structure, the book is no different from its predecessors. It has Ally Carter’s unique and hilarious way of writing and the problems Cammie goes through are somewhat relatable despite, Cammie’s prestigious background. Once again, the plot slowly builds up, gaining more momentum and creating an explosive finale. I give this 263 page book 4 stars.
