Karou is an odd girl. She has grown up moving from place to place and all the secrets she has to keep prevent her from making friends. When she can make friends, she often has to leave suddenly in order to run an errand. On top of this, no one believes her miraculous story that the creatures she draws in her sketchbook are real. Because of this, she ends up feeling lonely and strives to be a strong person who doesn't need anyone.
Daughter of Smoke and Bone is a great read. It is interesting following Karou as she tries to find out who she is. There is a lot of world building in this book and the names can be really hard to learn and pronounce. These things can make the book confusing, but the witty moments make the book fun. At times, the book can feel slow despite the action that is occurring in the plot. This book is very mysterious and draws you in almost instantly. The further you get into the book, the better it gets. I give this 418 page book 4 stars.
