Amy Rose Capetta’s debut novel, Entangled, is about a 17 year-old girl named Cade. For many years, Cade lived on the planet Anadana playing her cherry red guitar for many spacesick humans at Club V. After planet Earth had been destroyed, humans scattered across the galaxy. Cade’s life changes when she is on stage and the Noise, that has been plaguing her for as long as she could remember, blinks out. She meets a hologram of a man name Mr. Nixon. Mr. Nixon informs her that she is entangled to a boy name Xan. She is connected on a subatomic level and the disappearance of the Noise has everything to do with the fact that Xan has finally awaken from a coma. She is tasked with finding her entangled friend and saving him from people who plan to destroy him, the Unmakers. As Cade makes her way through the galaxy looking for Xan, she meets a diverse crew of people and learns more about her entangled history.
Cade starts out the tale independent. Although she doesn’t lose her independence as the story progresses, she learns to trust and rely on people, on friends. Her bonds with the people she meets grow strong and so does her link to Xan. Cade is a beautifully written character and many of her companions are multidimensional as well. Sadly, a few key characters remain mysterious or one dimensional.
In all, Amy Rose Capetta’s futuristic novel is fantastic. In some books where the plot is in a completely new world, a reader can have trouble relating to the character. In some areas, this is the case. It can be hard to get a grasp on the universe Cade lives in. Thankfully, that doesn’t take away from the story. Through Cade, we learn a lot about the universe she lives in and when she plays her guitar, we can feel the emotions and thoughts of Cade and the people around her. For those who are tired of the plot were a character is trying to save a loved one, this is not the book for you. We never learn much about Xan and he seems to be very needy. Although his neediness may have to do with being entangled, it is hard to care much for Xan and whether or not he gets rescued. As an additional merit, this book provides a new quantum physics definition at the start of every chapter although the definitions don’t have much to do with the chapter.
I give this 330 page book 4 stars.
