Legend, by Marie Lu, is the first book in the “Legend” trilogy.
This book is narrated by Day and June. Both Day and June live in a dystopian county known as the Republic. The Republic is constantly at war with neighboring lands known as the Colonies. Day is an infamous criminal that has sabotaged many of the Republic’s plans and property. June is a military prodigy that is committed to serving the Republic. An unfortunate event occurs forcing the two to cross paths and discover more the Republic's hidden secrets.
Day and June are worlds apart. Day grew up in a poverty stricken area. He is smart and defiant. After almost being killed by the country he grew up in, he dedicates himself to sabotaging the Republic as much as possible. June grew up in an elite family. She is incredibly smart, passionate, and obedient to her government. Within the military school she attended, she was labeled a troublemaker and had occasional acts of defiance. Despite these characters’ drastically different viewpoints, they are remarkably similar.
Legend is truly a book worth reading. It is a perfect example of the dystopian genre. It has the same type of setting as most dystopian novels, but the dual narration of characters from very different lives enhances the story and the setting. Even though both narrations are written in first person, it is always clear who is narrating. This book doesn’t number its chapters and the font for Day’s narration is distracting. For those looking for a fun and witty book, you’ve come to the wrong place. The world of Legend is no laughing matter. None the less, this book captivates your interest early into the book and the farther you get in the plot, the tougher the book is to put down. It is action-packed from start to finish.
I give this 305 page book 4.5 stars.
