Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows is the first book in the Six of Crows series. Six of Crows takes place in the same world as the Grisha Trilogy (although reading the Grisha Trilogy beforehand isn’t necessary). In this fantastical world where some people are born with magical abilities and countries stand on the brink of war. The Grisha are born with magical abilities ranging from controlling water to healing to manipulating matter. The Grisha are treated differently depending on the country. In some countries they live among other people, while in others they are enslaved or used as weapons. The story begins in the neutral nation of Kerch, in the bustling city of Ketterdam. Criminal mastermind, Kaz Brekker, was offered a chance at an impossible heist, one with a huge risk and a huge reward.
This book is narrated by five of the six main characters, each main character has his/her own back story. The synopsis gives a brief description of the characters. Because part of the fun is guessing which character matches up with which description, the analysis of the characters will be very limited.
Little is known about the infamous Kaz Brekker. He is ruthless, cruel, and willing to kill and maim to achieve his agenda. He is the leader of a gang known as the Dregs. The entire city fears him and he has been called a demon on more than one occasion.
Nina is a foreigner to the city of Ketterdam. She is willing to speak her mind, smart and works every day to make amends with her past.
Inej is a skillful girl who is part of the Dregs. Kaz benefits from her abilities and trusts her more than anyone. She is religious and constantly berates Kaz on his immoral manners.
Matthias is a warrior from the land of Fjerda. He grew up hating the Grisha and it was duty to hunt the down because his culture decreed that they were unnatural and evil.
Wylan is a also a part of the Dregs. While he is skilled in drawing and in demolition, he isn’t the most street wise of characters. He has strong morals and often disagrees with Kaz’s more violent way of doing things.
Jesper is a member of the Dregs and someone Kaz trusts. Jesper is loyal and quick-witted.
All of these characters are sarcastic, entertaining and wise beyond their years. All of them are teenagers despite their actions being more fitting of adults or young adults.
Six of Crows is an amazing book. Leigh Bardugo builds and exciting world that demands to be explored. The world is well made and includes many different cultures depending on the country. It is interesting and exciting. Each of the characters is well developed and believable. All of their backstories are explored and all of the characters develop over the course of the book, but many have bad blood between them. The interactions between characters are hilarious, and well-written. Sadly, many of the names of characters and locations are difficult to pronounce and will cause readers some angst when trying to discuss the book with others. The book’s plot never slows down and is exciting the entire way through. I give this 462 page book 5 stars.
