Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick
Joe Schreiber’s Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick is the first book in the Perry & Gobi series.
Perry Stormaire is like your average high school senior. He is busy applying for college while wondering what his future has in store for him. Things only get more complicated when his mother decides he could benefit from liking with a European exchange student. Quiet Gobija Zaksauskas had always been geeky and awkward, but on Prom night, Gobi takes Perry on a thrilling adventure full of murder and mobsters. In many ways, Perry is your average hardworking student. He is concerned with college, his band, and his future. His successful father often tries to force dreams onto Perry, snuffing out Perry’s strong will. He is constantly trying to get his father’s approval, but this dangerous trip around New York forces him to decide whether he will follow his father or his dreams. Au Revoir Crazy European Chick was a fun book. If you’re looking for a short, fast-paced story, this book is perfect. It doesn’t waste time and throws you into an action-packed story. While odd and erratic at times, the plot never fails to keep you engaged in the high-energy story. Unfortunately, the book falls apart almost everywhere else. This story stars two leads. While Perry is a well writ, developed protagonist, Gobi is not. Gobi is a foreign exchange student who hid her murderous tendencies and violent personality under geeky glasses and a quiet smile. Her English ranges from perfectly articulate to broken and her moods are even worse. While the situation is understandable stressful and Perry is annoyingly unhelpful, her moods seen to inexplicably fly all over the place. She doesn’t develop has a character, but instead, helps Perry develop. Regardless of the book’s lack of depth, it is fun and interesting. It has cute college essay questions to begin each chapter and occasionally answers them. This book is a light read and, despite the lack of comedy, not meant to be taken seriously. I give this 196 page book 3.5 stars. |
