A Breath of Frost is the first book in the Lovegrove Legacy and an amazing book. It takes place in 19th century London. Emma Day, an average debutante, is at a ball with her cousins Penelope and Gretchen wishing she could escape. After sneaking out of the ballroom, she finds herself face to face with another debutante on the verge of dying and that the building is on fire. With the help of a handsome Keeper named Cormac Fairfax, Emma makes her decent into the world of magic. A world composed of witches (used as a unisex term), warlocks, Madcaps and the Order which governs them and that she and her cousins and aunts are witches as well. As she learns more about her powers and the world of witches that she has been dropped into she is plagued with finding dead bodies and the Order’s prime suspect is her. As the number of murders grows, the more blame and suspicion is placed upon Emma’s shoulders. The ride with Emma as she explores her history and uncovers the murderer is marvelous. This story starts out slow, but grabs the reader as you uncover more and more about Emma’s mother, Theodora Lovegrove. This 477 page book is great read and a four star book. Unlike many of the emerging female heroines, Emma isn’t cold or strong in the beginning. As her magic develops, so does her character. I, personally, can’t wait to get my hands on the second book of this enchanting trilogy.
